MA (work-in-progress)

MA is a project that takes form through my relationship with my mother. Bearing the family name 馬 (mǎ), she immigrated to Singapore from Hong Kong in the early 1990s to start a family here with my Singaporean father.

As she currently transitions through into a new stage of retiree life, the camera functions as a conduit for our navigation, alongside our collaborative examination of both personal and family archival images. For me, these images project a stark image for her staunch tenacity as a mother of three and have come to speak to something of her abidingly youthful demeanor in embracing the uncertainty of life.
